2022/23 Major Pairs Champions Decided

By |2022-07-14T15:52:08+10:00July 14th, 2022|Categories: Women's Bowls|

The 2022/23 Major Pairs Championship has also been decided with the 2021 Champions, Irene Macdonald and Denise Lidbury, successful in defending their title. They proved to be too strong for the other sides in the competition. The runners up were Di Newell and Rose Farrington who also combined well to win their way into the final.

The real positive of this event was the number of the newer members of the club who entered. Congratulations to all of the players who took part – especially given the challenging weather they had to deal with!

Tuross Head Bowler’s Christmas Fun Day

By |2021-12-21T15:09:25+11:00December 21st, 2021|Categories: Women's Bowls|

Successful Combined Men’s and Women’s Bowls
Christmas Party

After many years of celebrating the end of year Christmas party as a women’s only event, the present committee decided to invite the male bowlers to join them this year for a combined Christmas fun event.
This proved to be a very successful initiative.

On Tuesday 14th December, 57 members attended the celebration. Traditionally the women members have dressed up in costumes pertaining to a letter of the alphabet. This has always created such frivolity and excitement. This year the dress code was the “Letter K” or Christmas attire and many members got in the mood and dressed up.

Members arrived in their costumes, to be provided with a beautiful Christmas morning tea, including champagne and fruit punch. This was followed by a “Joe’s Special” game of bowls.

A beautiful BBQ lunch was held after the bowls in the downstairs area of Club Tuross. A big thankyou to the able cooks, Greg Thornton, Colin Fletcher and John Fahey who assisted. The women provided delicious salads and sweets.

A total of 16 lucky door prizes were given out. We had the fun of a “chicken dinner” spinning wheel and a Christmas raffle, creating lots of opportunities to take home a prize.

President Doreen Monks chose the three best costume winners. Congratulations to Pam Mazzucchelli (King David), Julie Barningham (Knitter) and Denise Lidbury (Kung Fu)
on your creativity and skill.

After all that excitement, there was the traditional visit from Santa Claus who gave each member a gift.
Thanks were extended to all involved in organising and to those members who donated goods for the day. The annual “gift of appreciation” was presented to Tim and his greenkeeping staff, who work so hard to keep our greens in peak condition.

It was a very happy, successful day of friendship and fun. So many people made positive comments to the organisers and hoped that a similar event would occur again in future years.

Tuross Head Bowlers Combined
Presentation Day

Tuross Head bowlers held their Annual Presentation Day on Tuesday 16th November.
The bowlers enjoyed a game of bowls on a lovely sunny day. A feature of the day is the game played by the two Presidents’ chosen sides. This year it was won by the women.
Following the games everyone enjoyed a delightful lunch, provided by Jack’s kitchen.
The tables, decorated by Cheryl McRae and helper Pam Mazzucchelli looked very smart with the black tablecloths and Australian native flowers.
During lunch, bowlers enjoyed a slide show depicting the champions and highlights of the events of 2021. Despite the disruption of COVID, most major bowls championship events were able to be played.

MC for the day, Womens Bowls Secretary Irene Macdonald welcomed all bowlers to the celebratory event. A special guest was Tuross Head Country Club President, Roger Chappell who gave a very feeling speech and commended the Mixed Pairs final between the Lidburys and the Wagstaffs, as a tremendously skilled and exciting game.
Following lunch, Presidents Doreen Monks and Col Fletcher gave short speeches before presenting the following members with their awards.
Doreen mentioned the sad passing of veteran bowler and Women’s Patron – June Everett who died in Sydney in September aged 94.

It was a wonderful, intense for the players match, but an exciting one for the spectators, with Denise the eventual victor. Congratulations to these two champion bowlers.

We held a combined Ham Day last Wednesday and the winners received Christmas hams or turkeys. We were so lucky to get two games of 15 ends in before the rain. Several random lucky draw winners, as well as the daily raffle winners also took home some well received Christmas “booty”.
We look forward to a combined Christmas Fun day on Tuesday 14th December and another Christmas Ham Day on 18th December.
Women’s Bowls will recommence on 11th January. Men’s bowls continues throughout the holiday season.
We would welcome any new bowlers to our social bowls. Women play on Tuesdays, men on Wednesdays and Fridays and a fun event, “Barefoot Bowls /sizzlers” on Sunday mornings. Enquire at Club Reception or Secretaries. (see below for contact details)

Farewell to Stan and Margaret Peck

By |2021-10-26T15:51:21+11:00October 25th, 2021|Categories: Women's Bowls|

A large group of friends met in October  for a finger food lunch at the Tuross Head Country Club, to farewell long term residents of Tuross Head, Stan and Margaret Peck. Stan and Margaret are moving to the Sunshine Coast, when the border closure issues are resolved, to be closer to son Craig and family.

Margaret and Stan have lived in Tuross Head since 1998, having arrived from Ingleburn, and have made a great contribution to the bowling club and beyond.

Margaret played in club championships and pennant for the club for many years and was a very talented bowler, and also a very informed bowler who gave advice willingly on protocol and etiquette to many newer bowlers. Due to ill health and less mobility in later years, she discontinued her bowling, but was always happy to come to social bowls for a “good chat” and friendship.  Margaret was renowned for her

extensive wardrobe and “telemarketing acquisition skills” and we often admired her new purchases.

Stan continued his very successful bowling career until 2020 when ill health made it difficult to for him to continue at the skilled level for which he was so well known.

Stan was a joy to play with. He was a mentor to many  “on the green”. He is a humble and dedicated man, a true gentleman with lovely conversational skills making him loved by many. Stan’s contribution to the Tuross Head Country Club extends well beyond bowls as he was also a valued member of the management of the club. He had been a Director on the Club Board at one stage and was always keen to see the club surrounds looking their best. His great carpentry skills were an absolute asset to the club and he spent many hours at the club, pottering around fixing, mending and ensuring all was in readiness for fixtures. He also enjoyed enhancing the gardens. He liked pruning !! President Col Fletcher presented Stan with a beautiful handmade wooden plaque made by Dave Schmidt, with the words, “Life member, Mentor, Champion bowler, Good mate”, a succinct and true summary of Stan. He was also given a big bottle of Stan’s beloved Sauvignon Blanc.

Long- time players, Glad McPherson and Phyll Endall, gave eloquent speeches outlining memories of Margaret, followed by President of the Women’s Bowling Club, Doreen Monks presenting Margaret with a lovely gift to remember us all as she enjoys a cup of tea in her new surrounds.

They were both delighted with the beautiful card, made by Sue Fahey, which all friends signed.

We wish them well on the next part of their journey and will remember fondly the contribution that the Pecks made to Tuross Head particularly to the Country Club and the Bowling club.

Tuross Head Women’s Bowling Club Pennant 2 team off to the State playoffs in September

Tuross were the eventual winners after a very close and tense end to the game. After a beautiful lunch, they received the Region 9, Pennant 2 pins at presentation.
