The men’s golf committee has been fortunate in being able to attract the support of the Jack Newton Junior Golf coaching organisation who participated in coaching lessons for our future golfers on the club open promotional day held on Sunday March 16th 2014.
Hopefully this support for local juniors can be continued into the future with a proposal to instigate the return of a regular coaching programme. It was a pleasure and greatly appreciated to have the support and attendance of a past junior and local golfer Brendan Jones, now a touring PGA member and 1999 Australian Amateur Champion.
During this same year he was included in the Australian Eisenhower Trophy team which competed in Santiago, Chile. Other players in the team were Aaron Baddeley, Brett Rumford and Kim Felton.
It is doubtful if any golfer made a more spectacular start to their careers than Brendan. In his very first professional game in the 1999 Ford Open at Kooyonga, Adelaide he returned a card with birdie, par, hole in one, birdie, birdie for the first five holes to eventually finish with a first round 69.
Brendan has played in the USA tour and has won over 15 tournaments, mostly in Japan and Asia. His win in the prestigious Mizuno Open in 2014 was the second time he has won this event.
It was also interesting to note in conversation with golfers from other clubs who have played our course during the current pennant matches and the recent Week of Golf, in which we were one of the participating clubs together with Mollymook, Moruya and Narooma, the high regard in which our club is held.
